BOSTON – Elected state and local leaders spoke out today as the Patrick Administration announced to the Department of Homeland Security that it will begin a new program that will allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses in 2017.
” The granting of drivers licenses to unlawful immigrants by Governor Patrick is wrong, and his actions will encourage more unlawful activity that will further stretch local resources,” said state Representative Ryan Fattman (R-Webster), who is running for the state Senate. “ As long as I serve as a member of the legislature, I will fight hard to stop this misguided policy as it opens up the door for many more problems.” 
The letter in question announcing drivers licenses for illegal immigrants was authored by Registrar of Motor Vehicles Celia Blue, who stated the program is part of the state’s effort to meet the federal REAL ID Act. However, many leaders and families are concerned about the consequences of illegal immigrant benefits, like licenses, on municipalities.
During a recent Selectman’s meeting in Milford, Selectman Bill Buckley questioned the local impacts of illegal immigration, expressing concerns about the impact on town employees, services, and resident. “Milford has paid its fair share with immigration problems,” said Selectman Buckley. “ It is clear Governor Patrick needs to take a stroll down main street in Milford to understand the concerns our community has about this initiative. Now is not the time to be offering more benefits to illegal immigrants while the town continues to chip away at services and benefits for our town employees.”
Governor Patrick will leave office in January 2015, paving way for either businessman Charlie Baker or Attorney General Martha Coakley to take over the reigns of the executive office. Charlie Baker has stated he opposes drivers licenses for illegal immigrants, while Attorney General Martha Coakley has endorsed the plan.
