Trying to squeeze in a last-minute weekend away or finally taking a vacation for the first time all summer at one of the holiday apartments you’ve been looking at? Exciting, right? Going on a vacation is a great time for everyone, especially if you’re going to a destination that you’ve never been to before. Maybe you’re going to your own private island of Turtle Island in Fiji, (look here for information) to get married and you’re trying to get everything organized in time. You don’t want to miss out on all of the experiences that your destination can provide you with after all. Don’t know what to pack to make your vacation one to remember? Then check out these helpful packing tips to help simplify your vacation packing!

1. Make a list.
Trying to think of everything you need to pack can be overwhelming. Make a checklist for each member of the family and the essentials that person will need. Be sure to include everything from clothes to electronics and then cross off items as you pack them. Still overwhelmed? Consider this checklist guide from Real Simple.

2. Call ahead.
Are you traveling with kids and all the gear that means? Call ahead to the hotel. Does the hotel have a portable crib that will save you the trouble of packing one? Every little bit helps!

3. Consolidate.
Consider, when packing, what can be consolidated or what items you really only need one of. One tube of toothpaste should suffice for the entire family and do you really need three sweatshirts or will one or two do for the time you will be away?

4. Have a “Go To” bag.
Having a “Go To” bag when traveling with kids is important. Having toys, snacks, drinks, napkins, and other essentials right at hand can save you a lot of time, frustration, and messy cleanup. It might also be worth putting some hand sanitizer in this bag too to keep your children’s hands clean when they can’t wash their hands properly.

5. Double-check the essentials.
This might be the most important tip to keep in mind when packing for your time away. Double-check that you have packed the essentials. Medications, money, important paperwork, printouts of reservations or directions, and other important items should be kept in a safe place that is easily accessible.
