The New England Revolution announced an acquisition today, 21 year old midfielder Colombian Luis Alberto Caicedo Mosquera. On loan from Colombian side 2nd division club Corporación Club Deportivo Tuluá, commonly known as Cortulua, based in Tulua, Colombia. According to the Revs statement, Caicedo has been added to the active roster using TAM (league money). He will also occupy an international roster spot.

Before his move to New England, Caicedo from 2015-2018 competed in 70 matches from Cortulua, including 67 starts. In 2016, Caicedo registered 35 starts, a personal best, helping Cortulua win promotion to Colombian top flight. In 2017, Caicedo played in 30 matches, all starts, in Colombian top flight, however Cortulua, finishing 19th out of 20 teams, were relegated back to 2nd division.

Prior to his time with Cortulua, Caicedo spent a season, 2014-2015 season, in Portugal with Sporting CP B team, making one appearance, he was just 18 at the time.

After his stint in Portugal, Luis Caicedo joined Cortulua, and was a member of the U-20 Cortulua side that finished third place in the 2016 U-20 Copa Libertadores. Starting two out of the three matches in the group phase, Caicedo started the opening match against River Plate from Argentina, where he was red carded, missing the their second match. Following his suspension, Caicedo started the third match against Deporttivo la Guairá from Venezuela. Qualifying for the semi-finals, Caicedo started against Liverpool FC (Montevideo) from Uruguay, going down in penalty shoot out 7-6. Following their semi-final elimination, Caicedo would make his fourth and final start of the tournament, against Lanus (Argentina). His side would ultimately win 1-0, finishing 3rd.

For a young player, at just 21, Caicedo doesn’t have much high profile experiences in his career. Mostly a Colombian 2nd tier soccer player, he has spent time over seas in Portugal for a season at 18, and his experiences during the 2016 U-20 Copa Libertadores has helped his career by getting more exposure to playing internationally while still young. Even though he has mostly played in the Colombian 2nd division, Caicedo has played, mostly started, most of the matches he was available to play in.

 

Despite all this, Luis Caicedo, at least according to my research, has never been called up to any level of Colombian national team squad.
