A car carrying five people slammed into Kirsch Liquors, in Worcester’s Main South, in the early morning Friday after being struck at an intersection by a car traveling down Madison Street.
WORCESTER — Worcester’s Kirsch Liquors is still cleaning glass from its walls and carpets, and it may be doing so for much longer, after a car slammed through the front its Main Street store early Friday morning.
Owner Bob Kirsch said he received a call from his alarm company just after 1 a.m. Friday reporting a burglary. No one was working at the time.
“I can see my store on my cell phone so I turned it on and saw a car in my store,” he said.
The crash was captured on store surveillance video. From outside, it shows a car travelling down Madison Street strike the vehicle as it was travelling on Main Street.
Inside, product and shelving is thrown across the store. An ATM was pushed 15 feet into the store and the stores lottery machine was damaged.
“It’s a good thing no one was standing there or they would have been mush,” Kirsch said. For anyone that could have been standing in the store, the personal injury claim that they could have started by using a personal injury attorney in Oklahoma City or various other attorneys, would have been more or less an open and shut case considering the evidence.
Seconds later, five people can be seen exiting the vehicle. Minutes before police arrive, two men in hoodies can be seen stealing cigarettes from the store. One rides away in a bicycle carrying a large number of cartons under his arm.
Worcester Police issued a statement saying a 2005 Toyota Avalon was turning from Madison Street onto Main Street when it collided with a 2003 Volkswagen GTI, which was traveling North on Main Street. The collision caused the Toyota Avalon to crash into the liquor store located at 646 Main Street.
“The operator of the Toyota Avalon was identified as a 21-year-old female from Brockton. The female had four other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the cash. One of the passengers was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries,” the release states. “There were no other injuries reported.
The operator of the Volkswagen GTI was identified as a 21-year-old male from Putnam, Connecticut. There were no passengers in his vehicle.
The matter is still under investigation.

For Kirsch, the clean-up could take weeks. He said a 42-inch door, like the one that was damaged, is not in stock and could take up to two weeks to replace. In addition, the cleaning service he hired said small slivers of glass are so embedded into the carpet that they will not come out. The carpet, just installed in June, may have to be replaced.
There appears to be no serious structural damage, however. And the store is open for business.
According to city Communications Specialist John Hill, a building inspector was on site about 1:30 a.m. to evaluate the damage.
“He noted that the vehicle had crashed through the store front cleanly, missing any supporting construction. So, after talking to the owner, they agreed it was safe to be open today,” Hill wrote in an email. “The inspector plans to go back to the store later today to follow up with the owner, who will need to apply for a permit to repair the aluminum store front, which would trigger further inspections.”
