The Reverend Linda Parnham has accepted the last ballot position in Worcester's general election on Nov. 3. She replaces Philip Palmieri, who withdrew from the election on Tuesday.

WORCESTER – Linda Parham has accepted a spot on Worcester’s Nov. 3 ballot for at-large City Council race. Parnham replaces sitting District 2 Councilor Philip Palmieri, who withdrew his name from the ballot on Tuesday.

Parham finished 13th out of 16 candidates in last week’s preliminary election. Palmieri, a 14-year district councilor, finished 11th in his first at-large attempt.

Parnham will not be seeking the mayor’s seat, leaving three candidates to seek the top seat on the council: Sitting Mayor Joseph Petty, At-Large Councilor Michael Gaffney and candidate William Coleman III.

The top six candidates out of 12 will be named at-large councilors.

Tuesday, because of Palmieri’s late withdrawal, election officials could not say how the election would proceed without a legal review. However, it turned out they did not have to look very far for legal precedent.

In 2007, William McCarthy finished 11th in the preliminary election in September and withdrew from the general election. He was replaced on the November ballot by John Mahoney, who finished 13th in the preliminary.

Mahoney ultimately went on to finish in ninth place in the general election.
