Senator Edward Markey endorsed Mayor Joseph Petty in his re-election bid on Wednesday morning while visiting Worcester.
WORCESTER — Calling Worcester “a city on the move,” Senator Edward Markey offered his endorsement to Mayor Joseph Petty on Wednesday morning while visiting Worcester.
Markey cited City Square, the expected non-stop commuter train to Boston, improved graduation rates, a lowering unemployment rate and “a sense of real economic movement” when talking about Worcester under Petty’s leadership.
“He is also someone who has brought the city together,” Markey said. “All parts of the city feel that they have a leader in Joe Petty.”
Markey also said Worcester now shows an inclusiveness that is needed now and will be needed into the future.
“He’s a great leader,” Markey said. “Not only is there a great deal of investment coming into Worcester, I think the voters should invest in Joe petty if they want to get this city to complete the mission of having it viewed as one of the great cities in the United States of America.”
Markey’s tour included UMass Medical School and Elm Park, where the city has pumped millions into the park’s renovation, Petty said. That included handicapped accessibility, a new playground, new paths, benches and wiring for security cameras.
Petty also noted the use of tax credits in the renovation of the Fire Alarm & Telegraph building in Elm Park. That renovation was done in conjunction with Preservation Worcester and is now a branch of Spencer Savings Bank. Markey said he would support similar programs in the future.
Petty is facing at-large Councilor Michael Gaffney and candidate William Coleman III in the Nov. 3 election.
