BARRE – Police have arrested a Leominster man in connection with the road rage incident in Barre over the weekend that left a 71-year-old man seriously injured.

Ryan Kobus, 25, has been charged with assault and battery on a person over 60 years old with serious injury, disorderly conduct and malicious destruction of property over $250 – for damage he allegedly caused to the victim’s hearing aids. He was arrested on a warrant in Leominster Wednesday evening.

The victim, Walter Young, was pulled from his car on Route 122 in Barre Saturday around 6 p.m. in what police said they believed to be a “road rage incident.” He was beaten and seriously injured.

Young may decide that he wants to contact a personal injury attorney to seek damages against Kobus for the injuries which he sustained. Police had posted both Young’s description of the suspect and surveillance video showing the suspect’s truck driving behind the victim’s car in an effort to identify the suspect.

Barre Police Chief Chief Erik J. Demetropoulos thanked the public for their help after the department reached out via social media for information on the suspects.

“Tips from, ‘I don’t know if this will help,’ to ‘I saw the vehicle and got part of the license plate,’ continued over and over until we were able to piece everything together,” said Demetropoulos. “Also, there were hours of painstakingly going over all of the video footage to piece together the puzzle.”

Surveillance video also showed a second black SUV driving ahead of the victim’s car, which police later said they believe be somehow involved in the incident.

Demetropoulos noted that the incident remains under investigation and that more charges may be coming against Kobus or others.

Kobus could be arraigned as early as Thursday morning in Western Worcester District Court in East Brookfield.
