After losing their season opener last week in Seattle 3-0, the Revolution continue their road trip to start the season, this time in the Bronx versus New York City Football Club (NYCFC). City were hosting their inaugural home opener as a new franchise in MLS. Last week they faced another MLS team in their inaugural season Orlando City. Until NYCFC has their stadium built, their home games will be played at Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx.
Lee Nguyen made a return to the lineup for his first game of the season. Jermaine Jones was still out, and Teal Bundbury also missed this game with a right shoulder sprain. Unfortunately for the Revs, they dropped this one as well. 2-0 was the final score. Spain international David Villa scored the first goal in the 19th minute. In the 84th minute, former Revs forward Patrick Mullins punished the Revs for leaving him unprotected during the expansion draft and scored the 2nd goal of the game, to make the final score 2-0 to New York City. Revs didn’t make their jobs any easier, because in the 66th minute, Revs captain Jose Goncalves was sent off for taking down Khiry Shelton as Khiry was ahead of the last defender. (when last defender takes down forward on break away its an automatic red)
The Revs are off to another slow start. Zero goals scored and 5 goals against in their first two games of the year. Last season they also started off poorly. Lost 2 of their first 3 games, also giving up 5 goals in first two games. They didn’t score their first goal until the 4th game of the season. So no need to hit the panic button here. Early season injuries to your key players doesn’t help.
Their next match will be this Saturday. It will also be their home opener for the season, versus Montreal. Game is set for a 3pm start. A little home cooking always does everyone good, lets hope this is true for the Revolution.
