President Barack Obama will be arriving in Worcester on Wednesday, June 11, to give the commencement address at Worcester Technical High School. This is a tribute to the students, faculty and parents as well as the businesses and city officials who have supported the school over the years.
He will be traveling from Worcester Regional Airport to downtown Worcester’s DCU Center. There will be a number of road closures, some we know and can plan for, but others will be last minute decisions made by his Secret Service and Worcester Police Department. We do not know the specific route; however, road closures on major thoroughfares between the airport and DCU Center are likely.
We anticipate that there will be no parking on Pleasant Street for the duration of the day – and perhaps other streets on the route from the airport to the DCU Center.
Downtown, Commercial Street from Foster Street to MLK Blvd will be closed from approximately 10AM to 6PM with no parking for the duration of the day. Foster Street will be closed from Major Taylor Boulevard to Commercial Street and Major Taylor Boulevard will be closed from MLK Blvd to Foster Street from approximately 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
The Chamber is advising area businesses to plan accordingly and to communicate this information to clients and customers.
In addition, there are a number of events happening in downtown Worcester this week, including the New England Fuel Institute and the Massachusetts Democratic Convention. The events anticipate 500 and 7,000 attendees, respectively.
