A new sports team is coming to the Woo! The city of Worcester will be home to a new soccer team, Worcester FC. (not to be confused with Worcester City FC from England)
Worcester FC will be competing in the ASL (American Soccer League), which is considered 4th tier soccer in the American soccer Pyramid. So it is nothing big, but for those who support soccer, its a good thing to happen. And for those dreaming of a future in the sport, this is another great stepping stone towards that. The team has yet to design their custom sports shirts so let them know if you have any cool ideas!
This should make a nice rivalry with other local ASL teams, like Western Mass Pioneers (Ludlow, MA), Rhode Island Oceaneers (Cranston RI), and Mass United (Lynn, MA).
I recently went to my first U.S. Open cup game on Wednesday night, in Boston, when the Revolution played the Charlotte Independence, a team in the USL, a third tier level soccer. I’ll be honest, I was surprised with the amount of fans that flew up from Charlotte. I would guess about 2-3 dozen, no big deal some would think, but for those fans, it was important enough to fly up from Charlotte to Boston. And they didn’t just sit there quietly, they were load, yes annoying, but at the end of the game, as they were cheering on their teams win over the Revs. It’s not going to put Charlotte on the map, but for those players, it must of meant a lot!
So even if Worcester FC is going to compete in a lower league, does that mean we can’t support them? As a resident outside of Worcester, I think sports fans in that city can do more to help support their local sports teams. As the 2nd largest city in all of New England, still recovering from the loss of the Sharks to the west coast, no reason why hundreds cant come out to Commerce Bank Park (Foley Stadium), especially when the city has thousands of college students playing sports.
