A clinical advisory has been provided to all health offices in the Wachusett Regional School District regarding the EV-D68, Enterovirus, that has been reported in the news in recent days. Although no cases of EV-D68 have been officially identified in Massachusetts, there are suspected cases that are being monitored closely in Boston and Springfield.
The virus is predominantly associated with respiratory disease. Many infections will be mild and self-limited, requiring only treatment of the symptoms. Atypical symptoms associated with respiratory illness should be reported to your family’s primary care physician.
Soap and water are the most effective method for hand hygiene, as hand sanitizers are less effective with this type of virus. The Center for Disease Control recommends that standard precautions should be used for suspected and/or confirmed cases of enterovirus.
Advice for parents and students: Wash hands often with soap and water; avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands; avoid sharing eating utensils; disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
Proper hygiene, including hand washing, will be encouraged within our school community.

Thank you and have a nice weekend.
