Bruins Steal Show at NHL Awards

The Boston Bruins had a strong showing at Tuesday night’s NHL Awards in Las Vegas. Patrice Bergeron took home the Selke Trophy and was also named NHL 15’s cover player, while Tuukka Rask received his first ever Vezina Trophy.

Bergeron received the Selke as the best defensive forward of the 2013-14 season. He edged out Los Angeles Kings forward Anze Kopitar and Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews for the award. This is the second time in his career that the award has been given to Bergeron, who recorded more faceoff wins in the 2013-14 season (1,015) than any player has recorded in a single season in the last seven seasons. Bergeron finished second in the league with a career-high plus-minus rating of +38. Additionally, it was announced that Bergeron had been chosen to grace the cover of NHL 15 after more than 10 million fan votes.

“Being featured on the cover of NHL 15 is a dream come true,” Bergeron said. “The fact that the cover is selected entirely by fans is an incredible feeling. The passion and support from hockey fans, especially Bruins fans, is unlike any other sport and I’m so grateful to everyone who voted for me.”

Rask won the Vezina for 2013-14’s top goaltender. Rask received first place votes from 16 of 30 general managers around the NHL. He posted a career-high in wins with a record of 36-15-6 and allowed two goals or fewer in 37 of his 56 starts.

Boston Re-Signs Svedberg

The Boston Bruins announced Monday that they’ve re-signed goaltender Niklas Svedberg to a one-year, one-way deal, worth $600,000. The one-way deal means that Svedberg will be the backup for Rask, replacing Chad Johnson. Johnson is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Svedberg has compiled a combined record of 62-23-6 in Providence over the last two seasons. He started one game for Boston this season against the Nashville Predators and earned the win.

San Jose Re-Signs Travis Oleksuk

The San Jose Sharks re-signed forward Travis Oleksuk Wednesday to a one-year, two-way deal, worth $550,000, which means Worcester should have their second leading scorer back at least to start next season.

After struggling in his first professional season in 2012-13, Oleksuk put together a solid 2013-14 campaign, scoring 19 goals and 21 assists for 40 points. Oleksuk finished second on the Sharks last year in points behind only Freddie Hamilton (43).

The Sharks initially signed Oleksuk to a two-year entry level contract prior to the 2012-13 season, following his senior year at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he posted 53 points in 41 games played.
