Revs 2018 kit

First match of the 2018 MLS season, and an opportunity to make a good first impression for new manager Brad Friedel, but unfortunately it was the same result as though it was still 2017.

In his first match as a club manager, this was Brad Friedel’s opening day squad.

First match of the year was against the Philadelphia Union, in Philadelphia. There are three new high profile players in the starting eleven, left back Gabriel Somi who signed from Sweden over the winter, Wilfried Zahibo from Spain (French born), and Cristian Penilla from Ecuador who last played for Brazilian side Chapecoense. Goalie Matt Turner filling in for an injured Cody Cropper. With these changes, and a new manager, there were reasons for optimism. However, after 24 minutes into the match, we saw a repeat of how last season ended.

Following Antonio Dellamea’s red card, Brad Friedel subbed out Cristian Penilla, having his team debut cut short for defender Jalil Anibaba, to keep four defenders in the back. But almost 15 minutes later, just before halftime, Philadelphia scored the opening goal to make it 1-0.

I just want to know what Revs goalie Matt Turner was doing there? Fell to the ground too easy, needed to be stronger and not leave the net wide open. There wasn’t any contact.

Half time thoughts from new manager Brad Friedel

Down to ten players, and trying to prevent more goals against, it was no surprise to see the Revs attack cautiously and see few attacking opportunities. It was also no surprise to see the Union have so many scoring chances. This match should of easily ended 4-0 minimum with the chances the Union had. To me it is unfair to judge the 2018 team and what kind of team the Revs will be based on their first match. It is frustrating to see how this match went down, but Friedel is managing his first club matches and will have plenty to learn still. As for the two red cards issued to Delamea and Dielna, dating back to last season, the Revs have accumulated 6 red cards in their last 5 ROAD matches. That is amazing considering many teams will not accumulate that many red cards in a whole season.

In the 69th minutes, Philadelphia went up 2-0. New signing Gabriel Somi didn’t look good here.

With minutes left in the game, and down 2-0, captain Claude Dielna made a bone headed decision here. Not only did Dielna get a second yellow, red card, putting the Revs in a deeper hole, the Revs will also be left with out their two starting center backs for the home opener next weekend. Dielna was very aggressive against the Union, and lucky he didn’t get sent off earlier in the match. Can’t have your captain picking up stupid fouls like this, not aware of the situation, and except to be captain in the future.
