On August 6, 2011, a US Boeing CH-47 Chinook military helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down while transporting a quick reaction force attempting to reinforce an engaged unit of Army Rangers in Wardak province, Afghanistan. The resulting crash killed: 17 U.S. Navy Seals/Seal Team 6; 5 U.S. Naval Special Warfare Personnel; 3 U.S. Army Reserve Personnel; 2 US Army Personnel National Guard; 2 U.S. Air Force Pararescuemen; 1 US Air Force Combat Controller and a US Military Working Dog.

On that fateful mission was Philadelphia native Cryptologic Technician, Petty Officer First Class Michael J. Strange. The loss of Michael was devastating to his family. The grief was unbearable. During this time, it may have been very likely that the navy seals flags that once flew so high in the air to show solidarity for all of these officers are now flying at half-mast to remember those who have lost their lives. In the months following his death his father, Charles Strange was at a loss, his oldest son was gone and the enormity Michaels death encompassed his every waking and sleeping moment.

Families of Soldiers and SEALS Killed in Extortion 17 Helicopter Crash Call for Congressional Inquiry

Charles Strange needed someone to talk to-someone who could understand the emotions he was dealing with. He began reaching out to other Gold Star families. And from those connections The Michael Strange Foundation was born.

Through healing retreats the foundation provides unconditional support to the families of fallen service members. The retreats are lead by mental health professionals who specialize in grief counseling. Being together, having shared similar losses provides a sense of community and support to Gold Star Families.
